Lucinda Williams Run -   Soldiers Song

Wednesday 15th of June dawned bright and clear, well it was cloudy but not raining and it was warm and we all like warm weather don't we. So leave home a little earlier than usual to get across (or round) York, pick my mate John up from home and on to the meeting place just outside Shipton on the A19. We were first there for a change but very soon our fellow travellers arrived. First were Mike and Peter in the MX5 followed soon after by Derek  with his wife to make sure he behaved as this was his first time with us and she probably didn't want us leading him astray. As if? Derek was in his CGT and very nice it looked too. After a bit of a wait Dunnington Dave arrived in his BGT soon to be joined by Dave York who's RV8 was indisposed so he was hitching a lift.

With no one else turning up we set off for the Green Howards Museum in Richmond. Up the A19 we went to Thirsk then across to Northallerton and on to a B road that would take us straight in to Richmond except we got stuck behind a learner driver and it took a little longer than expected. So once we got to Richmond and into the market place we had to find parking places and it was just a matter of driving around until one became available. So when we all got parked up and assembled we went on to the museum.

The Green Howards Museum

Green Howards Museum Entrance, Richmond

The museum is spread over three floors tells the history of the regiment from when it was formed in 1688 right up to the present day and how the name came about. There are uniforms of every type worn over the years and details of every war, battle and campaign that the regiment were involved in. There is a medal room with over 3,000 medals including eighteen Victoria Crosses and three George Crosses all awarded to men of the Green Howards Regiment. The regiment is now known as the 2nd Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards).

After we had viewed all the exhibits and browsed the shop it was time for lunch. Off we went to the George and Dragon at Hudswell as featured on "The Dales" series on tv and what a fine place it is. It houses the village shop, the village library, good food in proper Yorkshire helpings and a view from the outdoor seating area that is so good it gets a mention in a guide book I believe. The food was excellent and so was the Black Sheep Bitter but the drivers couldn't over indulge. All too soon it was time to head for home but not all by the same route. I went through Catterick Garrison and then headed for Northallerton on the B road we had been on earlier. This time I caught up with a local authority refuse collection vehicle being driven in a very spirited manner on the winding road. Maybe he was pretending he was driving an MG. So there we are, another run over, the next one to look foreword to next month.
