Ryedale & York MGOC invade Beamish!

Home

It all started at 1130 on Saturday 4th June as four cars met in the lay-by at Skip Bridge on the A59. A deep sense of foreboding enveloped us as our Chairman, and navigator for the sortie, was spotted speeding past us heading towards Harrogate! However Pete (Magellan to his friends) and Jean soon backtracked and rejoined us.

Reformed we set off to the Black Sheep Brewery bistro which was to be our lunch stop, needless to say Pete led us straight to the Brewery without any problems!

The weather turned colder and started to spit with rain so many of us took the opportunity to put the hoods up. Pete again took the lead and led us on a circuitous but interesting route, via Richmond to pick up a sheep that had gone astray, to arrive at the Premier Inn Washington where we were to night stop. Next thing on the agenda was the photo shoot opportunity outside the Cooperative store at Beamish.

There was still almost an hour to go to our buffet supper and many of our group took refuge and solace in the ‘Sun Inn’

After supper we repaired to yet another hostelry, the Toby Inn adjacent to our hotel which, unfortunately, didn’t quite have the same ambience as the ‘Sun Inn’! After a restful night for some (the others suffered the pounding beat of a disco opposite) we all enjoyed a superb breakfast served by the cheerful and friendly staff and then it was off to Beamish where we parked up the cars.

Our day was essentially free to explore this expansive open air museum. The weather could hardly be classed as ‘flaming June’ but nevertheless we managed to see many of the attractions.

A great weekend away with good friends, any ideas out there for the next suitable venue?
