The Simon and Garfunkel Run (Scarborough Fair)

Wednesday 6th of April dawned and with good weather forecast it was time for our first run of the year. We met at the Duke of York and our destination was the cafe at Oliver's Mount overlooking that jewel of the east coast, Scarborough. Mike Boddy had volunteered to come up with an interesting route for us so we let him lead the way. So Mike and Jim went first in his MX5, followed by Peter in his MX5, then Dunnington Dave in his BGT, Dave York and Ian in the RV8, Dave Knight, B Roadster and me at the back, another Dave in my B Roadster. Is there a club with a greater percentage of members called Dave I wonder?

Our route took us through Buttercrambe, Skirpenbeck and Bugthorpe where an elderly pedestrian looked twice as we rumbled past him. We had a stop as we entered Leavening so that Mike and Jim could consult the map while the rest of us enjoyed the scenery. We rerouted via Langton and North Grimston got back on track at Wharram le Street and continued through Duggleby. We stopped for a break between Weaverthorpe and Butterwick so that we could admire each other’s cars, share flasks of coffee and make use of the hedgerows!

Thus replenished we continued on our way through Fordon, and Muston and once we were on the A165 were soon at our destination although Mike did do an extra lap of a roundabout to confuse Peter and D' Dave who were just behind! Oliver's Mount is on the south side of Scarborough and rises to 500ft above sea level and is home to the only public roads race circuit on the British mainland. This has been in regular use for motorcycle racing since 1946 and  the list of riders  who have raced there is a who's who of the sport with many world champions and TT winners among them. The current lap record is held by Ryan Farquhar who hustled his 1000cc Kawasaki round the 2.43 mile circuit in 1 minute 44.932 seconds, a speed of 83.368 mph. As this is a public road circuit anyone can do a lap but I doubt that anyone in a road car would equal Ryan Farquhar's time

At the top of Oliver's Mount is a war memorial containing the names of Scarborough's fallen from two world wars. A short walk away is the cafe with it's car park at the edge of the race circuit. We can recommend the fish and chips washed down with a pot of tea (other drinks are available) as that is what we all had. The cafe staff was very helpful and put three tables together for us even though they were busy with plenty of other customers.

After our excellent lunch there was time for a look at the view over Scarborough and beyond.

On our way home we called in at the Classic and Sportscar Centre near West Knapton to see what was for sale. Among the cars on offer was a Rolls Royce that had once belonged to George Formby and although it had been there only a short time had already been sold. After a good look round we all went our separate ways after a rather day good day out on excellent roads with excellent weather.
